Taylor Haskins has a track record of doing weird things to his trumpet noises. His last album (which was received well here at the station) was full of chopping and sampling and all kinds of cool tonal modifications to his sound. For The Point, he mostly forgoes the trumpet in favor of an EWI, a MIDI controller you can play like an assortment of wind instruments. He twists and runs this through a variety of filters and ends up adding a new-agey element to his laid-back slacker jazz, backed by Green Empire, but it’s as grounded as ever with him. Earthy, even. Like you’re lying in the dirt and the grass but looking up at the stars.
