Domestic Violence Services and Muslim Families

This Thursday, we had three amazing women on the show. We focused on services available to Muslim families experiencing domestic violence.

Andrea Albalawi is the Program Development Director for the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children. She shared information on the new foundation and its work to cultivate healthy families, and serve survivors of abuse, in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. The foundation recently opened the country's first licensed shelter.

Mark Potak on Hate Crimes in the United States

On Tuesday afternoon, Mark Potak of the SPLC and the Intelligence Project and Report participated in a guest lecture series hosted by the School of Social work. He discussed the problem of hate crimes in the United States and what we can do to prevent them. Challenges of Prisoners and Ex-Felons in Texas

This week we have a program focused on difficulties and injustices faced by inmates and ex-felons in Texas. Diana Clayton from the Texas Jail Project will discuss pregnant prisoners and health care issues in prisons, then Ruby Cortez from ANewEntry will share about his work locating employment and housing for formerly incarcerated felons.

Robert Jensen is an associate professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Jensen will be our guest on Upstream tonight, Thursday, February 28th. Jensen is the author of Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity (South End Press, 2007) and The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege (City Lights, 2005), among other works (see below.)

Tonight we will be discussing privilege and Jensen's most recent projects on pornography and masculinity. Upstream is social justice radio that goes against the mainstream flow.
