The Lovely Bad Things are a perfect mix of surf rock and ambient garage rock. The background female harmonies on most tracks are just loud enough that the mix of voices doesn’t over bare you. Some of the most danceable songs include “Kessel Run” and “Darth Lauren.” This LP has fast drumbeats, killer guitar runs, funky and upbeat baselines; everything you need for a good album. But every other song, a chill, head bopping number is thrown in that tends to focus around the female singer of the group (examples include “ Hear or Anywhere” and “Rope Swing”). They sound like they would definitely sound better live though. Not that “They Late Great Whatever” is a bad album, but I think their music combined with a natural echo effect provided by a venue would be an experience.
