Wow. Yorvit Torrealba, the catcher for the colorado rockies just blasted a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning to give the rockies a 4-1 lead over the Dbacks in the bottom of the 6th. Oh yeah, it was pouring rain. I can't believe how HOT these rockies are! I havn't seen a team be on this kind of streak since the '35 Cubs won 21 games in a row. Or the Giants (NY) in 1916 win 26 out of 27 games. And I didn't even see those games! Of all the teams in the majors, the Rockies are having the best end-of-season run in the history of baseball. Granted, they are beating the Dbacks, not another team such as the red sox or the indians. But hey, they are well on their way.
How does a team in the Majors win 20 out of 21 games (6 of which have been in the playoffs)? Well, when you look at their lineup, it makes some sense. 4 out of the guys who have started over 150 games this season have batted over .300. Not to mention you have the most likely NL mvp in matt holiday. Hell, id give him the MLB MVP award if there was such a thing. Almost winning the triple crown, Holiday was first in the NL in both total rbi's (137) and BA (.340). You also have guys such as troy tulowitzki, garrett atkins and todd helton. On the defensive side, I really like Jeff Francis. He looks like he's about 20 (actually 26) and he managed to be 17-9 this season striking out 165 batters.
I dont know what Clint Hurdle has done with his team but its working. Its working big time. I don't think that when they get passed the Dbacks they can bring home a world series, but 21 games ago I never thought theyd even be in the playoffs, let alone on this kind of streak. No one did. They are in a zone that not very many teams can or will ever find themselves in. Okay, im done with ranting over the rockies. IM TOTALLY JUST DONE. Im sure I'll talk about them on the show wednesday morning anyways. (9-11am!)
Well said! I had been
Well said! I had been perplexed for years as to how the Rockies hadn't broken off Clint Hurdle yet. I came to assume upper management figured it was the best he was expected to do for a team seemingly mired in lower mediocrity, much like Pittsburgh had done when they kept Lloyd McClendon far longer than they should have (and made up for that mistake by keeping Jim Tracy on a much shorter leash).
But as a Rockies fan of the past 14 years, this season has amazed me beyond anything I thought capable. I suppose the manager's decisions can only get a team so many wins or losses in any given year, but WOW. Like you said, I must give credit to those stellar bats they've had (despite Helton's postseason disappearance). What has really exceeded expectations is the injury-depleted pitching staff stepping up when it needed to most. For a ballclub where pitchers' careers go to die, the Rockies' arms have overachieved and are a huge part of them going to the World Series.
They will probably run out of steam when they face the eventual AL champion Boston, but what a streak!
