oh yeah, f3 fest

so much yet not too much happened at fun fun fun fest this past weekend.

this guy in the middle with the green shirt has an abnormally small head.

I will just recap in short bursts so as not to bore anyone.

*quick side note, I was working the fest with Super!Alright! and was mainly at stage 3.

with the above being said, this gave me the opportunity to see acts that I normally wouldn't have purposely taken a gander at.

Day I

MGMT - these dudes were nice to me back stage when I had no idea what they were hanging out there for.
As for me, I was getting hungry and began picking pecans off the ground and crushing them with my brute strength and picking at the fruits, or should I say "nuts," of my labor.
They were alright, nothing too memorable. In fact, I almost forgot they even played, that is until I looked at the line-up.

Prince Klassen - I was at first taken a back by the name he dubbed himself...Prince? What the fuck?! you ain't uh prince.
But then the more I thought about it the more I was like, hmmm...I guess if I were a DJ and could make up some fab moniker, I would dub myself Princess Jenny.
But I'm not that fab.
He was pretty good, and as long as you add some Jackson youz alright by me.

DJ Jester - this dude is from San Antonio and mixed "9 to 5" by the miss Dolly Parton...need I say more?

Grand Buffet - I had heard of but never heard them. Basically they are along the lines of MC Chris, I guess you would call it nerd hip hop, or some shit like that.
Well, I always enjoy witty banter between songs.

Cadence Weapon - it was all jam band. I listened to it for five minutes...then I left

Final Fantasy - I love love loved his shirt. It was a formal casual navy and white striped tee with a tail, so it was normal in front and long in the back, kind of like a mullet.

Busdriver - Fuck yeah! This guy has some mad motherfuckin' skill.
The way he moves his mouth, the things that come out of it, I couldn't understand a word cause it was faster than a speeding bullet.
You might have heard his work on the debut Islands album on track, "Where there's a Will there's a Whale bone."

Of Montreal - I didn't see all of the set, but they seemed fun, and I like when bands put on a fuckin' show. Lights, make up, video, and some moves. oh, and I heard "Purple Rain" from the VIP area, and thought to myself, is there some sort of DJ playing between sets? No, it was fuckn Of Montreal and they nailed it! Bang on!

GirlTalk - It's pretty hard to gauge a DJ performance. There is usually a stage full of dancing bastards and for some reason there is always that tall, awkward white kid in front that can't dance worth a damn.
It sounded good...uhm. But I guess in all actuality, you could have just spun the GirlTalk Album through and I wouldn't have noticed the difference. It's like a live CD listening party.
Also, the music choices were every pop hit that you were too afraid to ask that special someone to dance to at the junior high dance.
and if you don't know what I'm talking about then you were probably even more unpopular than I.

DAY II

MothFight - Austin's own exp/pop/indie collective. Now I could try to act all cool and be like, whatever whatever, they are an animal collective rip off, and gain some sort of cred for putting them down.

Obviously if you make this generalization then you hear music, but do not necessarily listen.
The thing is, they sound good on tape, but need to get their act together live. The whole sound board were lights and switches, but they definitely need to get their own sound guy, or maybe a list of instruments to board numbers or something.
Practice guys, I believe in you!

the Saints - it was nice, they didn't play the songs that I wanted to hear, but it was a pleasure to see these guys in action again. and mr Ted Leo was among the crowd. ah...i love him.

Clap Clap - urrm...I was expecting more clapping. is that so wrong?
Nah, they were pretty good.

Car Stereo Wars - My friend, Chris Rose, was DJing and asked for some pirate dancers, and I was more than obliged. Fun times at Fun Fest, to say the least. I think for DJ sets you get the most out of it by dancing on stage and having a time.

Ted Leo and reformed RX - I'm never disappointed as far as stage presence and performance wise. I was kind if let down, however, when he didn't play the songs I love and long to hear. but, eh...I love him, sort festival set and all.

MC Chris - this guy is funny. and he even sang that "Candy" song from Adult Swim's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

Diplo - pretty sweet, but I had had enough of crowded stage and DJ sets...we need to figure out how to make them more interesting.
Usually you can't even see the mix master behind the music because the table is being bum-rushed by half drunk mediocre dancers.

But, all in all, I would like to thank Eric Horn of Super!Alright! for giving me the most lax and pain free job at F3 Fest which gave me a wrist full of bands, which not only decorated my fist, but were as good as gold for free drinks, more porto-potties, free food, and back stage access.
also, I really enjoyed this festival, more so than ACL, which is more of a novelty Austin thing for out-of-towners.
This was more relaxed, less dense, and just easy like sunday morning.

fest friends!

and me at the end of the whole festival...

The End.
