Tom Brosseau
Cavalier 2007
FatCat
Grade: B+
RIYL: M Ward, Vetiver, Vincent Gallo

Born on the range of North Dakota, Tom was raised to play traditional prairie music similar to the likes of Woody Guthrie, Cole Porter, and new folk such as Nick Drake (RIP).

I had seen this guy perform before and it was boresville USA. It was back in 2006 SXSW and he was before Animal Collective and after Ariel Pink. Such a strange line up, and, when you’re waiting for a band such as AC to take stage, anticipation takes your mind as hostage.

It wasn’t a very complementary setting to say the least.

He’s basically straight forward acoustic indie rock with some piano and organ mixed in here and then, and when I was listening to this album to review it was mixed with some Vincent Gallo and I could, in some cases, not tell the difference due to the similar vocals which sound like they were sung either through a big tin pot or a very old old mic.

In all, this album is pretty good as far as new old sounding country goes if that’s your bag.

Rec: 7 – I want to make this moment last, 3 – committed to memory, 6 – my peggy dear (I like songs with names), 1 – amory, 4 – my heart belongs to the sea
