And so, a la TV Guide, here's my Cheers and Jeers in reference to my fun Spring Break SXSW-ing.
MUSIC
Cheers: Montreal (hell, all of Quebec)
I witness performances from Handsome Furs, Islands, Chromeo, and Hollerado. All Montreal-based bands. All of the performances were intriguing and awesome! Even though they didn't play the songs that I knew them for, the stuff they played sufficed. I love the Montreal music scene. Plus I got a Quebec t-shirt for reasons currently unknown.
Jeers: Vancouver
Although I heard it was a beautiful city, my favorite artists from the city disappointed me.
First off, Black Mountain. I was bored to tears at their showcase at Mohawk. This boredom was probably amplified due to the fact that they're one of my favorite bands.
And lastly, Matthew Good. I've been a fan of his work since I was the only middle schooler with MuchMusic in New Mexico. And he cancels his showcase at Momo's due to "illness". Disapproval.
Cheers: British Sea Power, Die! Die! Die!, Digitalism, and Chromeo
After attending their day shows, I want to do everything and anything in my power to listen to their albums and make them mine. Except for BSP, I have only one or none of the respective bands' songs on my Zune. I want to multiply that.
Huge Cheers: Noisettes
I was in attendance for their awesome performance for DirecTV. Then on that same night at Emo's, I ran into them and lead singer/bassist Shingai Shoniwa recognized me. I got to meet their friends/girlfriends, get a picture with them, and their autographs. That was really awesome.
FILM
Favorite Five Films of SXSW
1. (tie) Medicine for Melancholy and Battle in Seattle
3. Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay
4. Stop-Loss
5. Choke
Jeers: Music documentaries
It really bites how even documentaries about interesting music luminaries such as Lee "Scratch" Perry (The Upsetter) and Joy Division (Joy Division) could be so boring.
Cheers: Comedies
I felt blessed to witness comedies such as Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, Choke, and Assassination of a High School President.
Cheers: Vanessa Hudgens
She has a cute butt.
Jeers: Vanessa Hudgens
After the appearance at the screening of 21, she was taken from my view again. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Super Cheers: Victor Rasuk
I only talked with the Stop-Loss star for little more than two minutes, but he was quite possibly one of the nicest celebrities I have encountered with.
Super Jeers: Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Why did you have to screen while I was volunteering for the Austin Music Awards??? WHYYYYYY??? The hula dancers at the screening were soo hot too!
INTERACTIVE AND OTHER
Cheers: Screenburn Arcade
Quite possibly SXSW's best kept secret, I can't wait to volunteer for it again next year. Hopefully it'll be bigger and better than before.
Jeers: Perez Hilton
I saw him at the Austin Convention Center. I don't like him.
Cheers: Foreigners
I've seen people from Japan, England, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, saw a camera crew from Venuzuela, even was interviewed for French Canadian television. Foreigners are awesome!
Jeers: Bands that start late
If it says that you're supposed to be on at 10pm, you should be on at 10pm, not 10:20pm! Gah, I hate being lied too!
