Katy and Joe field your wildest questions and decisions!
Tonight we answered an email from a participant in a game of spin the bottle wherein a kiss was exchanged between friends and feelings were changed...potentially forever! How do you move forward from that? With caution, friend, with caution. Joe and Katy advised trying to assess yourself and the situation objectively, keeping in mind that most truly close friendships can withstand a bit of romantic confusion - worst case scenario.
We got a bit of a rebuttal in the form of a caller from a self-described love addict, who took issue with our pessimistic outlook on love. He talked to us about what it's like to be born wanting love and falling deeply in love with scores of different women over the course of his life and to emerge still believing in the powers of love. Email us at tellittoagirl@gmail.com and we can continue the discussion next week!

Tonight we addressed a handful of quandaries. A local chef called in to give resident TITAG-er, Andrea, advice on how to cut her teeth as a line cook (work hard, be polite, be willing, and don't complain - pretty solid and universally applicable advice). Next we heard from an emailer who wanted to know how to approach a girl in his class. As former TITAG honorary girl, Ty, always said, the best pick-up line is "hello". Don't bring up dating or be obvious. that's not right for a classroom setting, and it's coming on too strong. Make her interests your own and see where things go.

Girl Time! This week we fielded two main questions. One regarded vocabulary. An email correspondant worried that his/her naturally stilted vocabulary and speech habits could be alienating. The concern was that fanciful parlance could come off as condescending or out of touch. Perhaps. But focus as well on aspects of your behavior that you can more easily modify to convey warmth: non-verbal communication. touching, gestures, eye-contact, facial expressions go a long way in saying what words can't. Also general booth consensus was that people with specific speech patterns and strange jargon are rare birds worth appreciating.
Issue number two was from another emailer who begged this question: can one be stylish while playing sports? How does one reflect emotion/moon/idiosyncrasies of style while playing sports and doing activities that require specific flexible and breathable clothing of a limited fabric variety and cut? Unique t-shirts, jorts, head bands, and bike shorts were all suggested. But also, try not to focus too much on what you are wearing - try to have fun un-self-consciously. And try to win.

The Girls are back in town! With another new cast, no less. TITAG, generation 3 consists of Kiara and Katy with two new and sagacious additions, Brittany and Taylor - dispensing advice better than ever before! Email or gchat us at tellittoagirl@gmail.com! Tonight we fielded an advice request from a friend who has a really really mean boss. One who makes her distaste clear by gossiping about her subordinate while within earshot. No class. Our advice: let her know that you can hear her! Or you know, make a professional request for decency and courtesy and ask to hear feedback only from workplace performance and not petty personal judgements. Next line of business was about a particularly prescient quote by Beyonce linking independence and cultural capital to earning power and inequality. Spot on! However, the emailer pointed out that this is from an issue of GQ with Beyonce posed suggestively on the cover - hypocritical? Our answer: Beyonce is a powerhouse and can make her own decisions without the expectation of representing all women/artists/feminists. Tune in next week!

December 10,2012
Our miraculous penultimate episode of the semester. We helped Zoe ponder the fluidity of identity as she finds herself getting situated at her new transfer school and considering all options, even joining a sorority, something she would never have considered in the past. Our advice: labels don't mean anything - do what makes you happy, recorgnize your hesitate and stay self-aware, but don't be restrained by your past assosications and aversions. We welcomed back Kiara, who filled us in on her trip to Miami during Art Basel.
The Girls' last show of the semester! We talked about new beginnings (bye, Zoe!), and also partings. We advised a a friend and email correspondent about how to deal with a festive farewell function at her disappointing and unfulfilling internship. It's perfectly fine to communicate your disappointent, but keep the criticism constructive, and try not to be too bitter. Best of luck moving forward! We also debated with callers the merits of Christmas music. Joe and Katy balked at the cloying sentimentality of it, while Kiara and Zoe agreed that there's a time and a place for Christmas music, and that it can produce the feelings of warmth and good will which define the holidays.

Finals Week! ARRGGGH! Kiara offered a more eloquent reaction of horror and disenchantment that encompasses the accutely-felt end-of-college malaise and alientation. Kicking and Screaming, much???
Just kidding. We earnestly addressed the email regarding a relibably satisfying and fun albeit safe life of routine lievd in retreat (example: staying in your room for long stretches of time and while listening to pop music) versus the more passionately-felt life of a worldly extrovert pursuing rewarding and singular conversations with singularly fascinating people. How do you deal with the overwhelming and disturbing din of vapid chatter, and the career-centric expectations of sycophantry and hustle? Are you dizzy yet?
Bottom line: These are terrible things to deal with (requisite caeveat about the privilege of having these problems and being able to attend college). There's no shame in building a fort in your room and listening to christmas music and reading mom blogs if it helps you, but don't get too permanently discouraged. Try not to think too much about the emptiness of the lives of others - just focus on what you control: your own life, and making it as rich and exciting as you want.
We also entertained the query of a friend who wants to take a stable and comfortable friendship to a relationship place. It'll take courage, but we believe in you!
Finally, a friend who has been losing sleep over breaking off a connection with his bandmates and formative-years-friends. Be honest, be sensitive, but SAY SOMETHING.
Tonight: Zoe regaled us with her travails of courting her grocery store crush, and we continued the converation about romance with an emailer who asked about talking to a girl he likes and feeling the need to fill awkward silences. Our advice: silence is OK, and nervous and forced banter for the sake of avoiding pauses is much more uncomfortable. Be yourself!

Tonight we began with a quandary from an in-booth advice seeker: how do you reconcile internal guilt after crossing a line at a concert by coercing someone to swap spots? It's good to recognize when you've gone too far and make amends, but don't let the guilt eat you up. Use it to be a polite and compassionate audience member for future concerts. This led to a larger conversation about concert etiqutte and the politics of space and gender. This quickly morphed into strategies for exiting unsolicited conversations with guys with pick-up-artist tendencies (and one particular instance of encroachment on a park basketball court). We had a caller express his agreement, and he encouraged girls in general to not tolerate arrogant and pejorative alpha-male types.

Tonight was a pre-Halloween extravaganza. We shared a cryptic warning send to the TITAG email account about the looming day when digital watches will gain sentience and master us all, and moved on to more pressing matters. After sharing a delightfully detailed email from a listener who shares our fondness for Boy Meets World and The Feelies, we delved into his question about dating with ultimatums and absolutes in mind - particularly the distinction between refusing to date someone on anti-depressants versus refusing to date someone who identifies with another political party and subscribes to opposing ideology.

Tonight was big fun! We had TITAG alumni and official honorary girl, Ty, in the booth to talk about love and the best time he dressed as a "best man" for Halloween. We talked about how to navigate texting with a New and Interesting Person as well as counselling a friend who is locked out of her own bathroom and fears what may await her if she sates her curiosity. We attended to the troubles of a perplexed caller who asked the delicate question "How do you 'Friend-Zone' an acquaintance that you still want to hang out with?" a.k.a. can one have it all? Yes! How do you approach a near-stranger about forging a friendship? How do you make new friends, for that matter? What is social life like after graduation?! These are the big questions we wrestled with tonight on the show. Also, Zoe got some male perspective on boundaries of courting her grocery-store crush. Love connection in aisle six!

Tonight we addressed a spectacularly lengthy and detailled email about platonic relationships and how and why they can take a turn for the romantic. We were joined in the booth by Bianca and Danielle, two of Zoe's sassy friends who steered us toward addressing the question: how does one deal with a friend who hogs attention and can be a bit boy-crazy? Our advice: have a one-on-one talk about how it affects the friendship and swallow any caustic accusations of selfishness and "the need to peacock". We rounded things out by talking about bad haircuts to help Katy get over hers. Bianca reflected on the perils of being too enthralled in a complimentary hair-salon-lollipop to notice that the back of her head was being shaved. A++ advice.

The second was directed at our greenest member, who advised a caller on lesser-known subjects within the 1980s D.C. hardcore scene - is there life after Fugazi? How would we know?
