Few DJs these days are as electrifying as SPINALL. The Nigerian-born DJ and record producer has been captivating audiences for years now, collaborating with numerous prominent acts like Wizkid and Asake and innovating through TheCapMusic, his record label.

At ACL weekend 2, he cast a spell on the audience, creating an atmosphere perfect for grooving on the dance floor, making one forget they were outside during a hot Texas day and not in a club. Through his set, he also evoked nostalgia in the audience, reviving almost forgotten hits and making them flow together seamlessly and memorably. For instance, he faded into “One Dance,” which was particularly exhilarating, reminding one of distant memories.

Following his set, Fabiola Gutierrez, one of our PR directors, sat down with SPINALL and asked him a few questions. Read the interview below.

Fabiola Gutierrez: As an artist from Nigeria, what’s it like being able to share parts of your culture through your craft?

SPINALL: Honestly it's the best feeling ever. I love Nigeria so much; everything that I've become, everything that I'm learning– so much of it’s from back home, so it feels great to come here and see people embrace that and show interest. People ask me “What’s your real name?” and I'm grateful for that. I’d love to continue to showcase our culture and our art to the rest of the world.

FG: You’ve worked with some of the biggest artists in the world– what was that like for you?

SPINALL: it's a blessing. I'm grateful to all the talents that I've worked with in the past– they are so beautiful. I love the fact that they understood my ideas and that they put their efforts into them. I'm grateful for the kind of classic work that we’re able to make cause I take my time, and that’s how we make the best music. Shout out to all the talents and all of the creative people behind the scenes that show so much love.

FG: If you could create a remix of any random everyday sound, what would it be and why?

SPINALL: Any random sound– maybe a stainless plate.

FG: What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve ever been inspired by when making a track?

SPINALL: I think someone’s name. If you walk into the studio and you ask someone’s name and they say something, that conversation can lead into “Where are you from?,” and when they say where they're from, then it's like “Who’s the artist?” when you’re listening to them, which just brings you into someone’s world, and it’s beautiful.
