On Kappa Lambda Gamma Chi (KΛΓΧ)

After being kicked off campus seven years ago… the allusive, the illustrious, the sensuous Kappa Lambda Gamma Chi arises from their hiatus to remind the world what Real Greek Life Looks Like. Boasting an impressive roaster of shoe-gazers, trail-blazers, and soon-to-be big music money-makers, this humble fraternity has been biding their time in the shadows ever since their two-day intensive rager back in 2019, the notorious KΛΓΧ Fest. Held just north of the university, this 48-hour bender resulted in extreme merriment, noxious noise pollution, and led to an outbreak of demand for damn good music accessible and proximal to campus, which has still not entirely subsided.

After much prodding, we were able to sit down with a few members of this year’s pledge class, as well as some alumni who remember (blurrily) the great revelry that got ‘em canned by The Tower. Here’s what they had to say:

“Of course I knew about KΛΓΧ Fest… that’s half the reason why I pledged! The other half, of course, is because I’ve been looking for an outlet for my math-rock-banjo-synth fusion band. Can you believe KOOP turned down our EP!?”

— DJ Chad

“The grass was green, the folks were fine, the music was loud. What more could we have asked for?”

— Anonymous Alumni

“The darkest moment of my life was missing KΛΓΧ Fest. I was bedbound from mono after going bite for bite with a sleazy pledge on Burrito Monday. I could hear the music from my apartment though… It was like being locked outta heaven.”

— DJ Vyv14n

But that’s all old news now. KΛΓΧ is mostly above board these days. The fraternity is aiming to receive national chapter recognition this year, and as a part of that mission they’ve toned down their (alleged) hazing process. Despite this new bend towards moderation, we did still get a few concerning comments from current pledges about the rush process.

“Ever wonder why they’re redoing the tower? Last year, before we could get initiated as official brothers, Pledge Master Maile made us spraypaint ‘KΛΓΧ LIVES’ down the side of the whole building. One brother fell off our jerryrigged pulley system and broke both legs, but hey! That's a legacy for ya!”

—DJ Amoeba

“Pledge Master Burns is pretty brutal… Just last week, he had all us pledges sit down in the library and drilled us HEAVY on the Austin scene. When my bro didn’t recognize a Die Spitz tune, Burns made him review the ENTIRE mid-bin while twirling his paddle menacingly… Poor dude’s got a taste for some lame acid-jazz band called Deaf Opossum now.”

— "Nephew"

“I snuck into the Pledge Master’s office once and saw the spreadsheet for where our dues were going… it’s all limited vinyl pressings, polaroid film, and Geese tickets, man.”

— DJ Swirly

Regardless of the controversy—within and outside of the fraternity—KΛΓΧ will dawn their togas THIS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH at NEW GUILD CO-OP to continue the hunt for their newest pledge class. After careful vetting, they’ve rounded up the best noise in Austin to serenade the convocation: AmBi Mi, Bad News, In the Shade, and Oogwei. Bring your cleanest (or dirtiest, it might even get you more rep with the frat) bedsheet, tie it up real nice, maybe add a crown of laurels, and ask yourself before you go out this Friday—Do you have the Face for Radio?
