All Are Welcome: KVRX's Guide to Mohawk

Built by Austin-based entrepreneur James Moody in 2006, Mohawk has managed to survive the cutthroat competition of the Red River Cultural District and cement its place as one of Austin’s most noteworthy venues. So, why Mohawk?

Perhaps the Mohawk secures its timeless appeal with its unassuming exterior, maybe it’s their belief in their responsibility to music as a language, or Mohawk might remain legendary because of their commitment to uplifting quality artists. This author believes it’s Mohawk’s ability to juggle all of the above while retaining their rock ‘n’ roll flair that makes them the enduring venue we know and love.

In an interview with CultureMap, Moody admitted he used his 401k to make the purchase of what would become Mohawk. Though probably a ballsy move at the time, the venue has repaid this debt tenfold. While massive names like Of Montreal, Yo La Tengo, and Death Grips were making return appearances through the years to the venue, Mohawk was also hosting artists on the edge of their “Big Breaks” like Billie Eilish in 2018, Lizzo in 2017, and Big Thief in 2017. Just this year, Mohawk boasted appearances from Indigo De Souza,Black Country, New Road, and The Greeting Committee. Their past lineups go on and on: Ice Cube, Bon Iver, Alice Phoebe Lou, Alex G, and Mitski, to name drop a few. But don’t be mistaken; The Mohawk isn’t just looking for recognizable names to boost their sales. Their commitment to darn good music means they never shy away from amplifying lesser-known groups. A quick browse through their “shows” page might just reveal your new favorite artist.

Take note that Mohawk isn’t buying into the dog-eat-dog-capitalist-nightmare of the modern music scene. Their staunch support for the Red River Cultural District is clear across their social platforms. The non-profit, which coined the call to “Defend Red River,” gives businesses in the entertainment district an opportunity to find support for their venues. Mohawk’s support for the Red River Cultural District in turn supports job creation, paid gigs for artists, and their partners in the music venue world. Additionally, Mohawk uses their space to support the Austin community. With events that benefit the Central Texas Food Bank, Jane’s Due Process, and other kid-friendly bashes, Mohawk attempts to thank the community that supports them. It’s hard not to fall in love with a venue that is so rooted in Austin’s cultural landscape.

Flattery aside, Mohawk is the kind of place that gives Austin its reputation of gritty good times. It's somewhere you can stumble into on a chilly Friday night, expecting nothing but a thirst-quenching drink and a few decent tunes, and leave with a new love for the living, breathing music scene of Austin. Much like KVRX’s dedication to playing “none of the hits, all of the time,” Mohawk prides itself on its obligation to spread the good word of music to the people of Austin. If you, like me, ever find yourself unsure of your place in a sweaty crowd, look to Mohawk and their creed for a place that will always remind you that, at Mohawks, “All Are Welcome.”
