KVRX is back...and so are our concerts! Our first live show of the year is TONIGHT at Tweedy's Bar, just north of campus. Along with an indoor DJ set and two outdoor performances, Miranda Joon will be onsite doing special-edition KVRX tattoos from 4:00-10:00p.m.

To learn more about tonight's performers, read their interviews below.

Q: How long have you been DJing and how did you get started?

I’ve been DJing for a couple of years now. I had been wanting to start spinning vinyl for a while, and when I finally got a turntable setup, I would DJ friends' parties and small backyard shows.

Q: How would you describe your sound as a DJ? Do you work with any specific genres?

I mainly spin anything dance/pop/funk/boogie adjacent. I have MPB records from the 70s and 80s that I recently acquired in Brazil, so I’m very excited to start making that a large part of my set. I recently started incorporating my SP404 sampler into my sets to add some live FX.

Q: What do you like about the Austin music scene?

I like that a good amount of the venues in town, such as 13th Floor or Tweedy’s, are vinyl DJ friendly and a lot of shows have the capacity to have DJs open/play between/close sets.

Q: What is the best way to describe the sound of your band?

The best way to describe the sound of Linear Endo is "Endocore". We came up with it. That's it.

Q: How long has the band been together and how did it form?

The band formed at the start of 2024, Inspired by the likes of CAN, Yes and The Velvet Underground. Evan and I (Jimmy) would get together about once a week, and we would write and record a new idea each time until we had a full set ready to go. We then asked our close friends Julian and Rafe to join the group on keys and bass, respectively, as we knew that they were phenomenal musicians. After Julian and Rafe joined, the band evolved into something a lot more built on improvisation and freedom in creativity. I think the goal of all of our shows is to challenge each other to reach new sonic heights, especially with the songs taking on the structures they do.

Q: What is a recent project you have been working on?

We've been working on our first record called "Rogue", a very non-traditional first release; that'll be out in October.

Q: What is your favorite part about the Austin music scene?

My favorite part about the Austin music scene is how open and free it is. There's truly a place for everyone and every genre that comes to mind.

Modernform

9:15 p.m.

Q: What is the best way to describe the sound of your band?

Post-punk à la angular jaunt.

Q: How long has the band been together and how did it form?

The band wouldn’t exist without our talent duo siblings, Leo (drums) and Sofia (vocals), whose North Loop garage served as our earliest incubator. We formed in summer 2020 during the covid doldrums as raucous garage rockers; Jenna (keyboards, bass) was dating Leo (now married), and Chris (guitar) was dating Sofia. Our shared love of playing music made garage jams the perfect activity to pass the time. Eventually we decided to formalize as HOT///CAKES, and soon brought long time friend Aaron (keyboards, bass) into the band.

We’ve been active since, playing consistently and releasing two EPs under that name. As time went on, our creative intentions shifted and we settled into more consistent lineup behind Sofia’s excellent vocals. With a changed sound, new goals, and external factors all contributing, we decided to change our name to Modernform in June 2024.

Q: What is a recent project you have been working on?

We’ve been working on our first full-length since January of this year with our friend Ernesto Grey producing and engineering. Our first single, "Not Yr Angel," will be released October 18th. We’re super excited for y’all to hear it.

Q: What is your favorite part of the Austin music scene?

The bottomless ocean of talent in this city is crazy. We’re constantly inspired and wow’d by the talent of the musicians and artists in Austin. The community here has been supportive as hell. There are so many supportive bookers and bands who have helped establish us. Austin is a super important context to our identity and sound—we would not be the same band today if we had formed in any other city.
