Heyyy, this is Supriya aka DJ Soup and Sandra aka DJ Sandy. Our first show at KVRX was a 3 a.m. freeform show called And They Were Roommates which truly shaped our freshmen experience. Nowadays, we’ve been hosting Color Story, a specialty show, since Fall 2019 (not at 3 a.m.). We’ve been best friends since fourth grade and roomies since freshman year, so we have many stories to share on air with y’all!

How did you hear about KVRX and what made you want to do your show?

Winter break of freshman year I (DJ Soup) felt like I hadn’t really challenged myself/pursued something I was passionate about at UT during my first semester, so I looked up music-related orgs and stumbled upon KVRX. I remember emailing programming regarding getting involved at 3 a.m. and getting a response from Evan Stack like ten minutes later. My roommate, DJ Sandy, has a music taste that complemented mine so I thought it would be fun if we hosted a show together. We both attended a training session, and the rest is history. We used to run from Duren to the station at 2:55 a.m. to try to get to the studio on time and we’d crash for hours after.

What kind of music do you play on your show and what is its overall theme?

Each week, Color Story chooses a specific color in order to explore the emotions and memories associated with it. By creating an auditory experience, we hope to immortalize our favorite little moments through songs tinted with hues of nostalgia. The storytelling aspect of our show allows us to explore a wide variety of genres and artists—each session is unique and personal to us in different ways. Overall, our show flows like a conversation between old friends.

What is your favorite part of being a DJ?

DJ Soup: My favorite part of being a DJ pre-pandemic was going to the station and running into people right before our show. I also really enjoy how KVRX has challenged me to find new artists and genres to listen to <3.

DJ Sandy: My favorite thing about being a KVRX DJ is all the amazing new music that I’ve discovered throughout the years. The station really encourages you to step outside your comfort zone and explore new genres of music. Many of my favorite albums and artists came from New Bin finds or through the music that other DJs have shared with me!

Who are your favorite artists and what are your favorite albums?

Actually… Color Story had an entire show dedicated to our “Golden Albums” aka the top three albums we’d listen to for the rest of our lives. You can check out our 2/8/21 show to listen to some of our favorite songs :-D

DJ Soup: My Golden Albums as of right now are Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, No Dogs Allowed by Sidney Gish, and I’m gonna throw in Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones) by Jai Paul ahhhh. Some of my favorite artists are Sufjan Stevens, Fiona Apple, LCD Soundsystem, Joni Mitchell, Elliot Smith, Charli XCX (my Indian rep bless her), Lorde, MBV, Sidney Gish, and Mitski. My favorite components of songs are lyrics so singer-songwriter/folk is my favorite genre.

DJ Sandy: My Golden Album picks are always changing but, as of right now, I’d say: 1) Soft Sounds from Another Planet by Japanese Breakfast 2) Cupid Deluxe by Blood Orange 3) Lush by Snail Mail. Technically, Solange’s True EP isn’t an album… but it still holds an extremely special place in my heart. Some of my favorite artists in general are Willow, Rina Sawayama, Yaeji, and of course, the iconic Miss Charli XCX (did someone say Vroom Vroom?) And yes, maybe I am a BLINK.

Listen to Color Story every Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
