This is DJ Baby Loaf! I host a freeform show called time soup at the sweet spot of 1 a.m. early Monday morning.

How did you hear about KVRX and what made you want to do your show?

I've heard about KVRX peripherally for a few years, and even attempted to become a DJ in a previous semester, but it was my friend Annie Lyons (formerly DJ Gold Grrl) who inspired me to finally commit! Time soup was born because I like making people listen to music I like.

What kind of music do you play on your show and what is its overall theme?

My show centers on the fact that we live in a time soup! Amid my own fading perception of time, music continues to be the only thing to latch onto — monthly playlists have become greater markers of time than actual events in my life. I wanted time soup to be an hour where I can simply surrender to the soup! While some tracks make you feel more lost in time, others help bring you back to reality — they are all just songs I like, with no definable genre. For novelty, I also attribute each show with a "soup of the week," where I pick a soup that matches the vibe, or at least my aspirational vibe. Previous soups include: french onion, tomato basil, gazpacho, alphabet. I will not provide context.

What is your favorite part of being a DJ?

I love sharing the music I like, as all people do. There's also something to be said about the late-night slot. It feels like no one's listening but me, and I genuinely enjoy that. So intimate! It's also great to curate a diverse playlist each week, which essentially forces me to discover new artists and new music constantly.

Who are your favorite artists and what are your favorite albums?

Alright, time for some non-definitive lists. Lauryn Hill, Fiona Apple, Solange, Kate Bush, Noname, Mitski, Gwen Stefani (don't ask), Adrianne Lenker, Blood Orange, and so many more.

As far as albums go:

Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising

Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel...

Ms. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind

Solange - When I Get Home

Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll

Joanna Newsom - Ys

Mitski - Be the Cowboy

Of course, there's more.

Listen to time soup every Monday from 1:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
