Ishmael Ensemble is an incredible U.K. Jazz group from Bristol. Originally a project of producer and saxophonist, Pete Cunningham, their work has evolved to continually blur the lines between jazz and electronic music. Their latest release is an EP with Rider Shafique, a dark production layered with deep poetic lines.
The first song I heard of them, I played on the radio. It was the Intro song to their 2021 Visions of Light album, which I consider to be completely and beautifully composed. Seeing these songs played live... was otherworldly. I simply had no choice but to close my eyes and let the music within me. A definite transcendental journey it was rhythmically contagious, movement like the ocean: deep and loud, and yet intimate, and vulnerable.
