Which song, album, or artist initiated your love of music?

My dad had a huge CD collection when I was a kid, and my love for music definitely started there. The first artist I remember getting really into was The White Stripes. I love all their albums, but my favorites were probably De Stijl and Elephant.

How did you first hear about or get involved with KVRX?

I saw KVRX tabling on Speedway during my first semester of freshman year, and I thought it looked cool, but I was too nervous to go up to the table. So, I looked them up on Facebook instead and came to the first general meeting. There, I signed up for training and started my DJ journey!

What is your first KVRX memory?

Honestly, my first memory is getting incredibly lost on the way to Friday rotation and wandering around the CMA for a really long time. Thankfully, I eventually made it to the station, and I started a conversation with some people because I overheard them talking about Brockhampton (2018 was probably the peak of my Brockhampton phase LOL). They turned out to also be freshmen, and we made plans to go to the KVRX show the next night, where we saw TC Superstar (very classic!!).

Which shows have you had on KVRX?

~saturday sounds~ — Fall 2018 — Freeform

The California Sound — Spring 2019 - Spring 2020 — Specialty
I played mostly surf, psychedelic music, and 60s sunshine pop.

ribbit radio — Fall 2020 — Freeform

Far East of East — Spring 2021 — Specialty
This is a legacy show where I play different types of music from Asia.

Which KVRX staff positions have you held?

Programming Director — Spring 2020 - present

How has KVRX affected your interaction with music?

KVRX has opened my eyes to so much new music. When I first joined, I only really listened to popular indie rock, and while I still definitely like that genre, I'm also aware of so much more stuff now. Having freeform shows definitely helped me explore genres I was unfamiliar with, and having specialty shows helped me really dive into and become knowledgeable about very specific types of music. I also feel like I'm constantly getting cool recommendations and learning about music from other DJs at KVRX.

What’s up outside of KVRX?

I'm currently a copy editor at the Daily Texan (go Texas Student Media!!) and I also contribute to the blog and zine at Silk Club, which is an org for Asian women & non-binary creatives. In my free time, I like to run, skate (very badly), and read. I'm currently reading Michelle Zauner's book Crying in H-Mart and it's soo insanely good!

What is your favorite part of KVRX?

This might be a basic answer, but it's definitely the people. I had kind of a hard time making friends when I came to UT, but through KVRX, I feel like I found a really cool group of people who I can depend on. Everyone is so cool and open-minded and unique, and I'm so thankful for every connection I've made here!

What advice would you give to new dj’s?

Show up to stuff, take every opportunity you can, and don't be afraid to talk to people! You definitely get the most out of KVRX when you get more involved than you're required to be. People are also generally really friendly and laid back, and I think KVRX is a great place to make new friends. :)
