How did you hear about KVRX and what made you want to do your show?
When I was a freshman, I saw KVRX on a UT organizations page, knowing nothing about it. I tuned in, and the first thing I heard was First Contact - a talk show about my favorite TV series, Star Trek. I immediately wanted to get involved with KVRX in any way that I could, and next thing I know I’m getting trained to be a DJ. After playing a wide variety of genres on a freeform show for a couple of semesters, and later a disco show, I landed on my current show - Bounce To The Ounce - with my love for funk music. My show is named after the song of the same name by Zapp!
What kind of music do you play on your show and what is its overall theme?
I play all kinds of funk music with a focus on guitar-based 70s and 80s funk. While “funk” is an element present in many music genres, I specifically play deep cuts from 1970s funk, jazz-funk, and soul. Saxophones, flutes, and keyboards are often present in the songs, with the occasional soulful voice to accompany the funky instrumentals. The vibe switches between upbeat funk with virtuosic musicianship, to slow and groovy funk meant to chill you out. I think funk is often an underrepresented genre on KVRX, which is why I enjoy playing it!
What is your favorite part of being a DJ?
Being a part of a group of people with a passion for discovering and curating music is something I treasure. Having amazing friends that I can geek out about music with is so much fun, and before the pandemic, I was never alone at any concert I ever attended because of KVRX friends.
Who are your favorite artists and what are your favorite albums?
I am a diehard Deadhead, and my love for the Grateful Dead has given me an appreciation for all things live music - Allman Brothers, Phish, you name it. Some of my favorite albums include Remain In Light (Talking Heads), Liquid Swords (GZA), Steve McQueen (Prefab Sprout), Charli (Charli XCX), Aja (Steely Dan), and To Be Kind (Swans).
