Show Spotlight: The Residency with DJ Transition State

April 26, 2021 in Features

by Laren Spear

I’m DJ Transition State and I have a specialty show.

How did you hear about KVRX and what made you want to do your show?
My freshman year, my roommate convinced me to go to a general meeting. "None of the hits, all of the time" really spoke to me, since I love electronic music that never gets mainstream airtime.

What kind of music do you play on your show and what is its overall theme?

I mostly play Techno, but I also play House and Electro whenever it fits in. Outside of KVRX, I mix records together at clubs, and I brought that style to KVRX. That's why my show is called The Residency, which refers to being the resident DJ at a club. I have since found out that Carl Cox has been calling his radio show The Residency, which I guess shows that I am onto something. I play mostly Detroit-inspired Techno, which has its own distinct sound. It's music that I wish was on the radio back when I was first getting into electronic music.

What is your favorite part of being a DJ?

It's getting to be able to share the music I love with other people. When I get in the car, I'd love to be able to turn it on and hear Techno and have somebody else feed me all the best songs with no effort on my part. I enjoy getting to make other people's day, either by exposing them to new music they never would have heard otherwise, or playing people music they enjoy.

Who are your favorite artists and what are your favorite albums?

In Techno, people don't really focus on albums. It's more that specific labels have a sound, and most artists release singles with an A and B side, with a max of four tracks on one release. Given that:

Underground Resistance - “The Punisher”

Jeff Mills - The Purpose Maker

Drexciya - Deep Sea Dweller

The Martian - “Star Dancer”

Echoplex - The Detroit Walkout

Planetary Assault Systems - Planetary Funk Vol. 1

Vladw - Jiangqing
