RULITOS
The Austin-based Chilean-American musician, Daniel Sanchez, who goes by the name Rulitos, uses a mixture of traditional singer-songwriter and electronic music elements to craft his unique sound. Through this combination, he is able to push his music past his own limitations and redefine genre norms. Rulito’s musicality is all about experimentation as he tests the usage of bilingualism and the differences between playing solo versus playing with a whole band at live performances. His debut, Ep 101, which came out in June 2024, employs this sense of exploration immensely well, with each song embodying its own distinctiveness but staying cohesive with the album’s overarching atmosphere. Unlike other up-and-coming artists, Rulitos is entirely non-profit and does not have any financial gain in his endeavors. Everything he works towards is out of creative aspirations and self-expression, making his efforts and music void of any ounce of uniformity. --Vivian Day
EL TULE
El Tule, a band of Austin for more than twenty years, is the go-to for a high-energy, partying atmosphere. Their combination of Cumbia, Merengue, Salsa, and Reggae musical elements has made them a landmark band for anybody wanting to engage in a culturally engaging performance. An impressive aspect of El Tulo’s onstage presence is their extensive ability to portray the history, art, and legends of their heritage through their creative expressions and songs. Over the years, their supporter numbers have grown larger and larger, gaining them a spot at Austin City Limits in 2015 with a crowd of around 70,000 people. Despite some of their fan-favorite pieces, such as “Tres Viudas” and “Mi Niño”, representing ancient myths and tales, their messages still ring true and bring enjoyment to audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles. --Vivian Day
LOS JUANOS
Los Juanos, A San Antonio native band with a heavy “Puro Party” sound, are really, really good. This sound pairs perfectly with their indie “dream-pop” sound. This pair comes across perfectly in their music, creating a sound that is found few and far between. They credit their unique and rare style to their origins in San Antonio, stating, “and, growing up in San Antonio, all of these different styles are important to us." In fact, Los Juanos as a band could only have come to exist in San Antonio, where we have this culture of ni de aquí, ni de allá [neither from here, nor from there].” (James Courtney, San Antonio Current) Inevitable for a big break, Los Juanos are a powder keg, and the fuse has already caught fire. --Conor Hartley
