Finn Wolfhard - Happy Birthday by Finn Wolfhard

Finn Wolfhard’s debut album, Happy Birthday released June 6, 2025, takes listeners on a coming-of-age journey through adulthood, love, and everything in between. Wolfhard sheds the polish from his previous works and dives headfirst into sleazy, distortion-heavy rock, trading sweetness for grit.

Beginning with the title track, “Happy Birthday,” the song gives listeners a taste of what to expect throughout the album. It’s a celebration, but why does it feel so gloomy? The keyboard in the track reminds me of nights spent cuddled under blankets, dozing off to Sign Crushes Motorist and Duster’s Contemporary Movement on repeat. If you’re a fan of falling asleep to white noise or the low buzz of a loud AC, this song is the perfect listen.

Moving on to “Choose the Latter,” the pace picks up from the first track, and this time I find myself tapping my feet. This one is for those who struggle with the path life is taking them on. When the world demands action, letting things play out on their own can feel more tempting than being overwhelmed by constant choices. The song captures the pressure of being in the spotlight, expected to have everything figured out, even when you’re still trying to understand yourself.

A standout from the album, “Trailers After Dark,” is one of my personal favorites. I first stumbled upon the song through a crunchy YouTube recording from one of Wolfhard’s concerts before the album’s release and was immediately in awe. It quickly made its way to my Files app, becoming a personal delicacy I’d revisit in quiet moments of free time. If you find “In My Life” by the Beatles to be the perfect soundtrack for a sweet, slow love, you’ll love this track. Inspired by a TV channel that played only movie trailers during Wolfhard’s childhood, the song feels like a soft memory you cling to; close your eyes and your mind just might wander there. He encapsulates nostalgia through slow guitar riffs and tender vocals. In his performance of the track on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Wolfhard brings out the full essence of the song. If you’re more of a visual person, the performance is definitely worth checking out.

Moving on to “Everytown There’s a Darling,” the track tells the story of meeting someone who subconsciously begins to define a place for you. Think of hometown friends or the local coffee shop where you spend hours mingling with each other. The song suggests that home isn’t just a location but a feeling tied to people. It serves as a sweet reminder that home follows you, even when you find yourself somewhere new.

“Crown” is another standout from the album, driven by a heavy guitar pedal sound. If I ever get the chance to see Wolfhard perform live, this song would definitely have my head moving. A distinct distortion wraps around his voice, giving the track a gritty edge. As he reflects on his past traits, he questions whether his previous experiences define him and whether he can still blossom in this new chapter of his life.

Wolfhard’s ending track, “Wait,” is a collage of his musical inspirations. The song is reminiscent of bands such as The Beatles, Twin Peaks and Simon & Garfunkel. It’s another standout for me — the kind of track I’d play after an incredible hangout with a friend, letting it linger like a sweet memory. As a closer for the album, it feels like the perfect ending to the story.

Happy Birthday is a debut that hits hard, full of sleazy riffs, tender nostalgia  and moments that make you want to move your head and close your eyes at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed every track, from the introspective highs to the gritty, distortion-soaked lows. If you're in need of a new listen, this album is worth the journey.
