There is a flavor of doom metal that every time I find a new artist in it, it turns out that this new artist is one I was already familiar with and love.. Just in a new project. It happened to me with Marriages, Thou’s May Our Chambers Be Full, and Mrs. Piss.
Mrs. Piss is the short lived punk project of Chelsea Wolfe and drummer Jess Gowrie that produced one of my personal favorite albums of the decade: Self-Surgery. The whole album only runs 18 minutes, but is responsible for the most scrambling, teeth-bearing tracks that integrate Chelsea Wolfe’s doom metal background into a fresh punk album that I find endlessly listenable.
The whole album is combative and takes the posture of a defensive, reeling cat. My favorite track, M.B.O.T.W.O, insists that your sorry ass has no reason to think you can hold Mrs. Piss back from her life of violent trucking. The subsequent track, You Took Everything, accosts its listener for ruining her life with hard, hypnotic vocals backed with good old-fashioned metal screaming. In the final track, you can’t help but believe Mrs. Piss when she abrasively claims she’s a pistol when she’s loaded.
Mrs. Piss is a person who talks through grit teeth, untamed, and quick to leave, just like the only album she’s ever manifested. I love this album, and it’s so short, anyone should be willing to take a chance on it. Check it out, maybe you’ll be a Mega Babe of the Wild Order too. :-)
